Not a Man of Straw
Not
a Man of Straw
Our neighbor, Mr. French,
has a very large farm and he has had trouble with birds all his life. Birds eat
his vegetable crops and cost him a lot of money, so Mr. French has just bought
a computerized scarecrow called Worzel. Worzel is more than two meters tall and
has four legs. He has a round head and arms that swing from right to left. “Has
Worzel had any success?” I asked Mr. French recently as I watched him having a
walk in a vegetable field. “He has a tremendous effect on birds,” Mr. French
said. “Come and have a look at him. An ordinary scarecrow has a head full of
straw, but Worzel has a brain!” Just then I heard a loud moan and saw a
blinding flash. “You aren’t having a dream,” Mr. French said. “He does this to
frighten the birds!” Of course, there wasn't a bird in sight! “I must leave
now, Mr. French,” I said as I saw Worzel coming towards me. “Have an appointment.”
“He's harmless,” Mr. French said, but I wasn't going to wait to find out!
