What is Mandi Lumpur Phenomenon in Indonesia?

'Mandi lumpur' in English could be translated as 'mud bath'. This term come from a TikTok content creator at the end of 2022, when there was so many live TikTok account doing a weird challenge for TikTok coins gift as a reward. The challenge such as take bath with mud, take bath in public in the middle of the night, doing weird/risky movements, hitting themself, eating spicy/raw/bitter/sweet/sour/extreme food, etc. 

At first, this phenomenon becomes viral just because of so many weird challenges in it. It went more viral when there is a guy named Sultan Akhtar, which is a TikTok content creator that did the same weird live Tiktok, showing an elderly woman doing take a bath with mud in public in the middle of the night for a TikTok coins gift as a reward. Indonesian netizens went mad because many think that woman was his mom, and Sultan was forcing her to do it until one day that elder woman fainted. 

That thing made many responses from netizens until a TikTok content creator named Jhon LBF who is also a businessman, made a video that told Sultan to stop doing that weird live TikTok and also offer him to work in his company with a salary of 6 million Rupiah (390$)/month. Sultan replied that the video in his account said that he refused the offer, and if John LBF want him to stop him from doing live Tiktok, Jhon must send him money of 200 million rupiahs (13.000$)".

These things made netizens so mad knowing this man was a lazy person and only want money by sacrificing an elderly woman to get his favor. 

After that video went viral, Sultan was invited into one of the national television talk shows and give some clarification of the story. 

Sultan was living in a rural area of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. He explains if anything he do with his live content was scripted and with the permission of the elder woman itself. Not only the elder woman, Sultan do live mud bath with many people around his village. Things that he did in the live stream was the request and already approved by the neighbor around because they all know that doing live in TikTok was an easy way to earn a big money. Even Sultan was well-known as a hero for helping the elderly people that usually work as a farmer or laborers with a small income salary.

The elder woman in the video was one of his neighbors, when she take a bath in public in the middle of the night, she use clean warm water, and when the woman fainted is only a gimmick to attract more views. 

Short story after that, this phenomenon made a lot of controversies, a lot of people arguing about it, and also many pros and cons from Indonesian netizens. Until finally the Indonesian Minister of Social Affairs issued a circular letter that contain the prohibition of doing live TikTok in a beggar way. The Ministry of Communication and informatics also blocked Sultan's TikTok account and some of the TikTok creators that doing weird live TikTok in a beggar way. 

After that, Sultan created a new TikTok account that contain a live stream about eating extreme food. Many TikTok content creator also overhauled their live TikTok ways so as not to be blocked by the Ministry of Communication and Informatics.
