Paiton Tragedy 2003, Indonesia - A Tragedy that Overhauled the Bus Security System

The tragedy of Paiton in 2003 was an accident of a study tour bus that hit a truck caused the death of 57 victims in total. The tragedy happened in Paiton, Probolinggo, East Java province, Indonesia. 

The bus was on the way home after having a study tour in Bali, carrying students from Young Generation Foster Foundation Vocational Highschool (SMK Yayasan Pembina Generasi Muda-Yapemda) Sleman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The whole group was divided into three buses; bus 1, bus 2, and bus 3. They were supposed to be together until bus 2 decided to take a rest in Situbondo at 19:40, meanwhile, buses 1 and 3 would stay on the way driving to Sleman. 

Bus 2 continues to get on the way around 20:00. Not long after that when the bus was on the road in one of the sharp turns in Paiton - Probolinggo, a very terrible tragedy happened.

Chronologically when the bus was trying to overtake some vehicles in an uphill sharp turn road, suddenly there was a truck from the opposite direction (descending road) lost control due to shock, then hit the front of the bus. This caused the bus pushed backward and then another truck hit the bus for the second time from behind. 

The first hit caused the front side of the bus explode and made the passengers from the front side run into the back of the bus and try to get out from the back door. But unfortunately, those second hits caused the back door damaged, can't be opened, and also caused the leak of the gas tank, starting an electrical short that leads to the second fire and explosions. The luggage backpacks in the back side, causing the fire spread faster and the bus quickly filled with smoke. 

This moment happened very fast, the panicked passengers suffocating due to less oxygen and too many crowds, causing them to faint and then burned alive. The total of the victims was 57, including 54 students, 2 teachers, and 1 tour guide. The bus driver and the secondary backup driver managed to escape by breaking the glass of the front door with a minor injury. 

Not long after that, the firefighter with the fire truck came to put out the fire and found all of the victims piled up on the back side of the bus. Many ambulances were called and the victims were carried into Sleman. 

This tragedy caused deep sorrow and trauma not only to the family of the victims but also to all Indonesian and even inter-nations. Many bus transportation stopped the operation and many trips using bus was canceled for a long time, all Indonesian mourned and doing mass prayer in all over Indonesia.

Later after this accident some security system in the bus such was overhauled such as: changing the position of the gas trunk and luggage; adding more escape doors in the middle, floor, and rooftop of the bus; also adding emergency glass breakers in the windows, etc.
