What is Klitih Phenomenon in Indonesia?
Klitih was a term that is often being used in Yogyakarta and its surrounding, to mention the act of violence committed by teenagers in the night-time. The context of Klitih was a phenomenon of some teenagers attacking another teenagers that leads the victims to bad injury or even death. The phenomena was existed since around 2016 until right now (2023).
Many origins of Klitih, some people say it was an anagram of 'keliling golek getih' in English means 'going around seeks for blood'. Another said it was a term that comes from teenagers that usually do 'tawuran' which in English could be translated as 'gang fight'. Some others said it was a word in Javanese that means going out at night to relieve boredom. Some explain it was a name of a gangster and/or a name of a traditional market 'Klitikan' in Solo regency.
Many perpetrators of Klitih that have been caught explains various reasons for their acts, some of them says it was a challenge among friends for being respected and acknowledged, another said personal anger, and few said just doing it for fun.
Until now the police and the government are still not be able to quell the Klitih's crime. A lot of organization that created by locals inter villages/regions of Yogya, in purpose to do a mid night watch in intend to lower Klitih phenomena. Many social experts explain these teenager phenomena of violence and anarchism was triggered by various reason such as the economy, politics, and the society itself.
