What is Pagebluk Ketuk Pintu In Indonesia?

'Pagebluk' in English could be translated as plague/disease, and Ketuk Pintu is 'door-knock'. 'Pagebluk Ketuk Pintu' was a phenomenon that went viral in 2021, some kind of terror that comes in the middle of the night in the form of door knock, if the people inside the house open the door, the knock will stopped and there was nobody outside. After that, the whole people in that house will die a few days later due to a mysterious illness that can't be cured. Many people interpret that illness as coronavirus disease.

The phenomenon went viral after some videos on social media that come from different regions in Indonesia showed a door of a house knocked on in the middle of the night, but when they try to look into the outside from the window, there was nobody outside. The video went viral and many people call it "Pagebluk Ketuk Pintu" or "Terror Ketuk Pintu". There are also many stories of a whole family who died after they hear the knock in the middle of the night and accidentally open the door. This kinda story - phenomenon happened widely spread throughout many regencies in Indonesia

Some people connect the origins of the terror coming from 2007 In Sidoarjo, the story came after the Lapindo Mud Disaster that caused a sacred 'Andong' (traditional horse carriage) to drown in the mud. That causes a 'Pocong' (Indonesian dead people ghost) to ride the andong and haunt the whole region's house with a doorknock in the middle of the night, and if someone opens the door, that person will die. 

A similar story comes from the Madura region, the people believe the one who knocks on the door is called Jinn Tha'un (Jinn: invisible creature from Islam). In Kalimantan, people believed that the form of the one who knocks on the door was a masked dementor. Javanese people called this phenomenon "Lampor" aka. the flying 'Keranda' (Indonesian coffin). The point of the story is almost the same, there will be some invisible/visible creature that will knock on a house in the middle of the night, and better checked it first, if there is no one on the outside, just wait till the knock disappear and do not open the door or there will be the inevitable misfortune.
