What is the War Takjil Phenomenon in Indonesia?
From the Indonesian dictionary, takjil is the food or drink used to iftar (break the fast). During Ramadhan in Indonesia, mostly in big cities, many home-cooked takjil sellers show up on the roadside. The characteristics of good takjil sellers are having simple and non-permanent selling places, such as a small table full of snacks/drinks under an umbrella.
During Ramadhan in Indonesia, many social communities will hold random free takjil giveaways every day. They will give free takjil from the roadside to everyone passing by. Hunting takjil is the activity of searching for takjil in town, either buying the best homemade takjil or just driving randomly to get the free one.
War Takjil is a competitive term that leads to getting early takjil before it runs out. It's because most takjil is only produced at home in limited quantities and the takjil hunters are not only Muslims.
Indonesia has 6 religion wich means non-muslims also participate in war Takjil. War takjil terms are used in the context of tolerance and excitement to enliven Ramadhan not only by Muslims but also by other religions.
Not only war takjil but there are also a lot of competitive-tolerance-excitement religious events that happened in Indonesia. Non-Muslims will buy all of the takjil only one of them, the others such as Non-Christians will buy many communion breads and eggs when easter, non-Conghuchus will buy a lot of angpao on Chinese New Year, also War natal (Christmas war) when Christmas non-Christian will also enjoy the Christian dish.
This is only one of a few wholesome tolerance moment in Indonesia, theres many others, such six diffrent religions building each their 6 houses of worship lined up in Surabaya, etc.
