The Best Judge Scaling - Short Story About Life Experience
I'm a local comedian who was once invited to become the judge of a speech competition. Because of a traffic jam, I came a little late, just right when the competition started. As a result, I only got a quick briefing from the competition organizers and immediately sat on the judges' chair.
I was accompanied by the other two judges, who are experts in speech competitions. I was invited to become a general judge, representing most of the locals who don't understand much about speech.
That time, the competition went fine. After the contestant performs, the judges will say their own commentary if necessary. Because both expert judges beside me critically discussed the speech technique, I, as a layperson, couldn't talk much about it.
I understand the slight art of speech performance in general because I learned about stand-up comedy. But as someone who performs sketch comedy, at that moment, I can just throw jokes to make the situation more relaxed.
I will say such 'Your performance is good, if the other contestant is a duck' or 'I think your performance was just fine, in case these two experts are deaf' and 'your look is kind a stylish among other, you might win if this are fashion competition' etc.
The judge also demanded to give a number scale of each performer through an online form. The result will be shown at the end of the competition as an evaluation of others. Story short, the event went fine until the final score was shown at the end.
But the numbers make me shocked because each displayed score is a three-digit number (hundreds). This is because since the first contestant, I gave them all a rating scale of 1-10, instead of 1-100.
The committee forgets to tell me about the scale number in scoring. They realized my mistake right when almost half of the contestants performed. They decide to let it be because if they tell me to change the scale of the score, it would make the other half contestants score differently.
On stage, I apologized to all of the people for my mistake, so the committee must recalculate the score. The comitee manually count my 1-10 scoring to be multipled with 10. Luckily the audience did not bothered much and laugh about this incident, probably because I was a comedian since the beginning.
In the end, I was taking over the MC job and joking around on stage. The event went well till the end of the awarding, and somehow I was given an award as the best judge.
